Sunscape RV Park
Medical Committee
Febuary 9, 2011

Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Lee Apger, Chair, at 0904. Thirteen members were present, plus BOD liaison Mary Ann Fender.

Minutes were approved as read.

Kolleen reported that the Health Fair was on target to be well attended by both vendors and Sunscape residents. Various team members signed up at the January meeting and set-up members were asked to be at the CC at 0800.

New batteries and questions about beeper operations were handled.

The January 19 Fire Drill was discussed, and a Medical Team procedure was clarified, as Fire Chief George Bush is a member of Medical also. A general concensus is as follows:

Go to site. When Medical cart arrives, check-in.

Assure safety of residents and adjacent homes.

Call 911 if there are injuries.

Send one (1) to gate to lead any outside help to scene.

Assign team members to:

Shut off electricity and propane (if one and used)

Block traffic- if assigned to do so, stay with your cart, and clear the hose line

Bring bottled water (from your home if necessary)

Bring: flashlight, vest, mask (for protection from breathing smoke and particulates)

The Secretary will write this as a procedure and bring a draft to the March meeting for review and revision.

The Secretary will look into the feasibility of obtaining and labeling tote bags for team use, with suggested contents.

The Secretary will also draft a letter to the Manager from both Fire and Medical Chairs regarding the street markings of homes: many are fading, and both teams feel some method of designating propane homes is needed.

Review of previous month's calls.

Heather requested that newer members have more hands-on experience on the scene. The following discussion reflected that we will all try to get everyone involved, but it is each member's responsibility to speak up - whether they want or need relief, or want involvement. It was also noted that whoever is documenting information about the patient, please get medications information to the hand-on person (usually one of our RN's) ASAP. This can be important in evaluating symptoms. Also make note of hazards to call to the attention of the homeowner after the immediate crisis is contained (i.e. loose rugs, wobbly railings, etc.).

Vial-of-Life will be added to the incident report form.

Continuing Education:

First Aid film

JJSchmitz, Safety Chair, presented the MSDS training to the remainder of the team (several were present for the January training). Of important note: Section 6 contains the Health Hazards information.

At the completion of it, it was suggested that the Medical and Safety Committees jointly write a letter to the BOD regarding the obligation Sunscape (Federal law OSHA requirement) has to train and document the training (and periodic review) of employees and volunteers who are using or exposed/may be exposed to hazardous materials. As the film stated, there is a “right to know and obligation to be trained.” A concern about legal liability in the event of an injury was also voiced.

The meeting adjourned after the MSDS presentation.

Respectfully submitted,

Kolleen Apger, Secretary
