Quilters
Head Quilters: Donna Fredrickson and Elaine Anderson
Quilters: Althea Worrell, Nina Hogan, Barbara Hennon, Rosemary Hart, Sylvia Ewashke, Joanne Frank, Lois Emmel and more.In 1999 three ladies in Sunscape discovered that they shared an interest in Quilting. They began meeting in the clubhouse to make quilts. As the group grew and the new activity center was built, they moved there. When the activity building burned down they continued in the Community Center till the new one was built. Now over 20 ladies gather on Thursdays to make quilts for the needy. Over 1,700 beautiful quilts have been donated to the Hospice Center, Abuse centers, Eloy Ministries, Navajo Indians, Family Resource Centers, Churches, St. Vincent de Paul, victims of disasters, Homes for the handicapped, Layette groups and our Park Party. Most of the quilts are donated in Casa Grade, Eloy and Coolidge area, but some of the quilts have gone to Phoenix and Tucson and as far away as Afghanistan. Althea Worrell has made a scrapbook of pictures of quilts and Thank You notes.
The Quilters work on table placed together, large enough to hold a King Size Quilt or smaller for a crib blankets. The ladies seem to have the most fun sewing on the baby quilts and discussing their grandchildren while they work. They imagine the look on the face of the child or adult that will receive their blankets. They say "if you can push a needle through cloth or tie knots they want you to come and join them." Perfectionism is out and looking nice is in. They cut squares and strips from donated materials, sew them together for a top and then it goes to the ladies doing the tying of knots. An old sheet or whole piece of cloth is chosen for the backing to match the top and padding is inserted into the center. The colors and pattern of the ties of yarn or thread are selected and tying begins. The edges are pinned & sewed and a Sunscape patch is added. They have been known to make more than 10 quilts a day.
Most of the material they use is donated by people in the park and surrounding towns. Often the exclamation is heard "What are we going to do with this?" Then someone will say we can do this, that or something else. The quilters have a lot of expertise in using what is given to them. Even old jeans are cut up into squares. Material that has a stain or hole can be cut into squares. If a large piece of cloth is stained it can be used as padding for a blanket. If some of the clothing donated is only in need of repair, it is repaired and donated to the needy. The Quilters are thankful to the Wednesday Night Jammers & other individuals for their donations of funds to buy the needed items that have not been donated.
