Volume 12, No. 3: December 2007 ICE CREAM TREATMENT George and Charlene Truesdale are excited about looking forward to January to the next Ice Cream Day for them and a few other Sunscape residents. The ice cream is not for them, but for the residents at the Teen Challenge Ministry of Arizona, Home of Hope. This facility houses an in-patient drug and alcohol treatment program that is just a little different from other in-patient treatment programs. It is faith based and offers the opportunity for the children of the patient to also live and participate in the treatment regime. Teen Challenge was born in 1958 when Rev. David Wilkerson, author of “The Cross and Switchblade,” went to New York to reach teenage gang members. Out of the big-city slums was born the concept of a faith based inpatient treatment program, not only for teens, but for adults with life-controlling problems, mainly in the area of drug and alcohol abuse. George said impetus for Sunscape’s involvement grew out of a coordinated effort between Carolyn Bieker and Alisha Rasmussen a couple of years ago. They encouraged the park to take on the task of purchasing Christmas gifts for the family residents at the facility. The park selected the task as “THE” park project for the season, put up a tree and attached cards with family names. Park residents then took a card and purchased a gift for that family. Seems that in the process of “gift delivery” someone read the monthly food menu and noticed the absence of meat and dessert was generally Jell-O. The Jammers and Gospel Night groups at Sunscape contributed money to purchase meat and George and Charlene decided to donate ice cream on a monthly basis, along with some family visiting.
“Costs about the same as eating out one meal to purchase 5 gallons of ice cream, a few bowls, sauce, some plastic spoons, and deliver it,” Charlene noted. “And every time he goes,” she added, “he takes someone from the park with him to help, which includes just talking with the families.” “ I plan to take every person in the park with me before I finish,” George said. “ I sure enjoy it, and I sure get more out of it than the families do,” he added.

Desert Oasis . . . God with Us “Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is ‘God with us.’” Matthew 1:23 As we face a new year, what a joy to know God is with us. In the words of Joshua, “We have not gone this way before.” As we face 2008, there are so many questions, and so few answers. We do not know what will come to us and to those we love! We wonder what the new year has for our land! But in the midst of all our questions, there stands an anchor, “God with us.” Whatever the new year holds for us, we can count on God. What a mighty anchor as we sail the “sea of life.” What great joy and assurance can be ours as we step into 2008. “God with Us.” Love you, G. H. (IYQ)

Dear Sunny, I just got back from the big city, you know the one where the posted speed limit is 65 but everybody drives 20 miles faster since there are also signs posted that say they will ticket for driving 75 so everyone drives 85. Anyway, I noticed that all the businesses had big signs that said, “HAPPY HOLIDAYS.” It was Happy Holidays this, and Happy Holidays that… What ever happened to the old fashioned greetings? An Old Timer
Dear Old, You know the BIG deal about being “politically correct” with everything? Well, here’s my “correct” way of saying it: Here’s wishing each and every one of you Sunscapers a very, very MERRY CHIRSTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! And may God bless each and every one of you. Ole Sunny (and Millie, too)

The Property Committee
The Property Committee has been assigned the responsibility of maintaining an accurate accounting of all property owned by Sunscape Cooperative, determine it’s dollar value, and maintain a record of it’s location on a bi-annual basis. Prior approval is necessary from the Property committee when there is a plan to permanently add or remove items from any of the park owned buildings. That includes items that are being purchased or donated. “The reason is simple,” Howard Caires, Committee Chairman, said. “The Committee has been asked by the Board to keep control of all Park owned property, and unless I know what and where it is, I sure can’t tell them what and where it is!” “We are in the process of putting an inventory number on every piece of Park property in every room in every one of the Park buildings. That includes the Kitchen, Maintenance, Quilters, Pool Room, Library, Computer Room, Jim’s Office, Storage areas, Clubhouse, etc., etc., etc. If it’s in the park and in one of the common areas, it will be inventoried and will get an inventory number,” he said. “We will then know what we have and be able to get a handle on it.” “I want to know when we purchased it, how much it cost, where it is, and if we dispose of it, where it went,” he added. “We’ve got to know what we have and how much it would cost to replace it for insurance purposes. This is a business and we’ve got to treat it like a business,” he said. Howard is in his first year as Chairman of the Property Committee. His attention to detail, which he brought with him from the private business sector, has and will be a great asset to him as he assumes the role of “lead” man in the process of identifying, pricing, and controlling the huge inventory of buildings, supplies, furnishings, and equipment amassed over the past few years in the Park.

Mary’s Musings
I was so honored when Millie asked me to write my own column every two weeks or so. Just a little catch though, I had to name it. Well, I have an awful lot of great and talented friends around here so I asked for help on this and the winner is Mary's Musings. I really want to thank everyone who encouraged me to keep writing my opinion. The fact that so many of you read it really shocks me... So let’s get on with it. How about those decorations on the streets of our park!! Going around the park at night really gets you in the Christmas mood. But Thursday night really brought Christmas into Sunscape. The 20 plus Carolers were awesome and showed great Christmas Spirit. Thanks, gang, it was so special. Sure brought back many memories of past Christmas times for all of us. Our Christmas Float at Coolidge on Dec. 8th was quite a night for the float committee. The float started with a blown out speaker, so music was not going to be a possibility. OK, we're loud enough, was the consensus. So on we go… Oops! Got down to the clubhouse and lo and behold we have a flat tire. Our guys got the tire off and we went 3-wheeling on to the parade. Our hands, feet, and noses were freezing, but obviously our spirit won out. We took a third place. Now it is on to Eloy, on Dec.15th. Finally, the weather was to be on our side. HA-HA. Wrong. It was cold!!!!!!! We kinda lucked out when we were behind a hot air balloon and the operator would let his flame go every few minutes. Really wanted to tell you how or if we placed, but it was so cold everyone took off as soon as our float got to the parade’s end. Glad to have that over -- three parades and three Saturday nights in a row. Great job done by all who donated time to our Sunscape float. The Christmas parties around our park are going on and on, one right after the other. If you went to every one, December would have to be extended by at least two weeks. Sunscapers, you do know how to party! The Minnesota Canasta Card Party was attended by 48 happy card players. The finger food the ladies prepared could have fed the whole park. We do have fantastic cooks at Sunscape. I, for one, am very grateful for this fact because, as most of you know, I do not cook. Have you all seen the good looking people we have running for our Board of Directors? Not only are they good looking, they are all ready to take on a very thankless job. It really shows a great faith in our future as a co-op park. To each and every candidate we extend our thanks for your concern and support for Sunscape. – Mary Domeijka
Remember the Burma Shave Signs??? When I was a little kid my grandparents lived far away… like almost 100 miles. It was a major trip to visit them, but visit them we did whenever possible. It was always a long trip, but one of the great joys was the Burma-Shave signs that periodically appeared along the road. Here are a few of those little darlings… how many can you complete? (answers on page 4)
1. A Peach…. Looks good….with lots of fuzz…but a man’s no peach….????? 2. Don’t take the curve… at 60 per… we hate to lose… ????? 3. He played a sax…had no B.O…but his whiskers scratched… ????? 4. Last week my birthday alert let me know that Monday, December 17, was Dick Ungar’s 87th birthday. I sent him a card on e-mail, received a thank you, and then I sent a note inquiring about how he was. This is his reply. I thought that those of you who knew him would be interested. - Millie
Hi Millie-Not much exciting is happening around here. I'm still recovering slowly but I am definitely improving. Still can't drive a car but I am walking with only a cane much of the time. Joan is fine and still worried about me, but I think she is now willing to admit that the doctors were wrong when they turned me over to Hospice and said I only had about 60 days left (that was 20 months ago). We are moving to a retirement home next May or June and Joan is very excited about it. Our kids and grandkids are all fine and will all be here for Christmas so it should be a very happy time. Best to you and yours for everything good in the year ahead. Joan joins me in all our best. --J & D
(For you who do not know him, he is the “idiot from the east who enabled us to grow friendships (not cotton) on 11-Mile Corner Road. He had great faith in his project; and because he refused to give up his dream of a co-op here, we now have what we have. – Millie)
The American Red Cross Needs Volunteers Red Cross Disaster Action Teams (DAT) are organized to place trained Red Cross volunteers at the scene of a disaster any time of the day or night to provide immediate, identifiable emergency services to disaster victims and emergency workers. In addition to initiating Red Cross relief actions, the team paves the way for mobilizing other chapter and national sector resources that may be required. In our area, there is a need for additional DAT volunteers to respond to local disasters. During the winter season, these local disasters are almost always residence fires. Jim Cleveland, 24 MN, is a DAT team member in the local Red Cross Chapter and has the responsibility for covering Casa Grande, Coolidge, and Florence. To have the team meet Red Cross requirements, he needs volunteers to respond to calls with him. If you are a Red Cross member back home and would like to become a member of the Red Cross DAT team from Sunscape while you are here, please contact Jim Cleveland, 24 MN, 616-460- 5196, or e-mail him at jamescle2002@yahoo.com. Also, please contact Jim if you are not a member of the Red Cross, but would like the information about the Red Cross and the DAT teams. The training is easy, and the work makes you feel really good inside. ANSWERS to Burma Shave: 1. And never was 2. A customer 3. So she let him go 4. But kept his whiskers 5. But don’t get funny
SINGLES OF SUNSCAPE (SOS CLUB) Plans are being made to go to the new Harkins Theater on Sunday, Dec. 23. There is a signup sheet in the CH which states the time. Also we are making tentative plans to eat out together on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month beginning in January. Watch for details.
Comments from the Board As always, we would like to thank all the volunteers for the work that has been done and continues to be done to make our park such a great place to live. Keep up the good work. The Annual Meeting will be held February 12, 2008. You should have already received your packets for this. There are a number of By-Law changes to be voted on. These are very important because they are the rules we live by. Make sure to read them carefully and if you have any questions bring them up at the workshop on January 10, 2008. All are welcome, so please attend the workshop and the Board of Directors Meeting which will be held on January 15, 2008 at 9:00 am. We would like to thank the following people for running for the three open positions on the Board of Directors: Three year term - Jean Aili, Koleen Apger, Ken Macomber, Alicia Rasmussen, John “JJ” Schmitz, and Wayne Scramstad One year term - Neal Wehmer and Nancy Loveland
If One Day If one day you feel like crying … Call me. I don’t promise that I will make you laugh, But I can cry with you. If one day you want to run away .. Don’t be afraid to call me. I don’t promise to ask you to stop … But I can run with you. If one day you don’t want to listen to anyone … Call me. I promise to be there for you. And I promise to be very quiet. But if one day you call… And there is no answer, Come fast to see me… Maybe I need you.
